A separate study out of China looked at over 3,200 middle-aged and older adults and found something similar. There's also a 2025 trial protocol out of the Netherlands, the TEAMS study, running right now with 300 frail older adults. It's testing whether combining resistance training with a protein target of 1.2 to 1.5 g/kg a day beats resistance training on its own. Trials like this get funded because the old advice — eat the RDA, lift a little if you feel up to it — keeps failing to hold up under closer look.

Sarcopenia itself isn't rare. Depending on how it's diagnosed and who's being studied, it shows up in anywhere from under 10% to nearly 40% of older adults living independently, climbing to two-thirds of people past 80. It brings more falls, more fractures, more hospital stays. Protein won't fix all of that by itself. But it's one of the few pieces a person can actually control from the kitchen.

Here's the part people miss. Total daily protein matters less than most assume; how it's spread across the day matters more. Most older adults load their protein at dinner and barely touch it at breakfast. Muscle protein synthesis research points the other way. Split that same total into three or four meals instead, around 25 to 30 grams each time, and the body just seems to do more with it than when it all lands at once at dinner.

Two sessions a week of resistance work, paired with protein spread across meals, is the combination showing up again and again in current research as the more effective approach — not protein powders, not extreme diets, just consistent basics applied correctly.

If there's one adjustment worth making today, it's this: check what you ate for breakfast this morning, and see how much protein was actually in it. For most people over 50, that first meal is where the gap starts.
